The origins of the collegiate church trace back to the Roman Castra Regina, with legends claiming it to be Bavaria's oldest church. Historically, the existence of a palatinate with an associated chapel is confirmed from at least the turn of the 7th to the 8th century. Charlemagne is traditionally considered the first founder. The first written mention of a church dedicated to the Mother of God Mary and a collegiate church dates back to a document from Louis the German in 875. After a period of decay, triggered by the relocation of the palatinate in 887, King Henry II had the ruined church rebuilt and the collegiate church renewed starting in 1002.
