Stirling Castle

The first documented mention of a chapel on the castle hill dates back to 1110, founded by King Alexander I. Over the centuries, Stirling Castle was besieged or attacked at least sixteen times. It changed hands repeatedly between Scottish and English control, especially during the Scottish Wars of Independence. Significant battles such as Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn (1314) took place in its immediate vicinity. From approximately 1100 to 1685, it served as one of the main residences of the Scottish kings. Under James IV, James V, and James VI, as well as Marie de Guise, the castle was significantly expanded between 1496 and 1583. After 1685, it lost its status as a royal residence and became the headquarters of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment until 1964. In 1906, King Edward VII expressed his displeasure at the military use, which eventually led to its restoration to its historical state.

The castle is located in Stirling, in the Stirling district of Scotland, United Kingdom, at an elevation of approximately 80 meters above sea level.

Stirling Castle is now a national monument and is accessible to visitors. Many buildings have been restored and partially reconstructed to recreate the appearance of the late 16th century. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, the Royal Palace, and the Chapel Royal. The museum of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment is housed in the former King's Old Building.
