Stockholm Palace
Stockholm Palace, also known as Kungliga slottet, is an impressive Baroque palace in the heart of the Swedish capital. It is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in Scandinavia and now serves as the official residence of the Swedish King.
History+
The current palace stands on the foundations of an older castle complex, which was expanded in the 16th century under Gustav Vasa. In 1690, construction began on a representative palace under the direction of architect Nicodemus Tessin d. J. However, a devastating fire in 1697 destroyed most of the old castle. On its ruins, the current Stockholm Palace was built in the Italian Baroque style over the following decades, with its completion extending until about 1750.
