In Nienburg/Weser stands the Stockturm, a structure that was once part of Nienburg Castle. This freestanding brick tower, with its Renaissance elements, is the last remaining of the complex of the Counts of Hoya and today houses apartments.

History+

The Stockturm was built in the first half of the 16th century, when the Counts of Hoya expanded Nienburg into a castle, inspired by models such as the castles of Stadthagen and Bückeburg. The exact original function of the tower is not fully understood; it is sometimes referred to as a battery tower or a defensive or residential tower. After the death of the last Count of Hoya in 1582, the castle served as the official residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
