Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument near Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. This megalithic complex, surrounded by a ditch, is an example of human engineering from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
The origins of Stonehenge date back to approximately 3100 BC, when a circular earthwork and ditch enclosure was created. The megalithic structure was erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC. The complex consists of an outer circle of uprights topped with lintels, and an inner horseshoe-shaped arrangement of trilithons. In between, there are further structures of smaller stones and depressions. The entire site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1986.
Stonehenge is situated at an elevation of approximately 98 meters above sea level in Amesbury, within the county of Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom.
The ancient site of Stonehenge is accessible. The site is managed by English Heritage and is accessible for tourism.
