The origins of Stonehenge date back to approximately 3100 BC, when a circular earthwork and ditch enclosure was created. The distinctive megalithic structure that defines Stonehenge today was erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC. The complex consists of an outer circle of uprights topped with lintels, and an inner horseshoe-shaped arrangement of trilithons. In between, there are further structures of smaller stones and depressions. The entire site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1986.
