Superiorat Rötz
The former Superiorat Rötz in Bavaria, once an outpost of Schönthal Monastery, is a historic building now protected as a cultural monument. It is nestled in the landscape of the Diocese of Regensburg and bears witness to a turbulent past.
History+
The monastic foundation was established in 1297 when Dukes Otto III and Stephan I of Lower Bavaria transferred the patronage rights for the parish in Rötz to Schönthal Monastery. The Augustinian Hermits shaped the religious life at this site, dedicated to Saint Martin, for centuries. During the Reformation, conflicts arose as the local population resisted the monks who opposed Lutheran teachings, leading to the dissolution of the establishment in 1559. In the course of the Counter-Reformation, the Augustinian Hermits returned to Rötz in 1631. Their presence finally ended in 1803 with secularization, after which the rectory was inhabited by secular clergy.
