The construction of Svartholm Fortress took place between 1749 and 1764 under the direction of Augustin Ehrensvärd. Its strategic position at the mouth of Loviisa Bay was crucial, as it was tasked, together with a planned land fortress in Loviisa, with repelling Russian attacks and protecting the region.
