On a mountain spur in the Ellwanger Mountains lies Tannenburg Castle, one of Württemberg's best-preserved shield wall castles. This hilltop castle rises above the Bühler valley.

History+

The origins of Tannenburg Castle likely date back to the 11th or 12th century, presumably built by the Ellwangen Abbey. The complex was first documented in 1223 as a border fortress of Ellwangen, associated with the family of Tannenburg. Between 1230 and 1240, the castle underwent expansion, but it was destroyed at the end of the 14th century. Reconstruction took place in 1398, and further expansions followed in the 16th century and again in 1822. Since 1931, Tannenburg Castle has been owned by the Zipperer family, who acquired it that year from Ernst Zipperer senior.
