The Temple of Mars Ultor is a central component of the Forum of Augustus in Rome. Inaugurated in 2 BC, it is dedicated to Mars the Avenger.

History+

The planning of the entire complex, comprising the forum and temple, began as early as 42 BC under Emperor Augustus. Initially conceived as a monument to the Battle of Philippi and to legitimize Octavian's succession, the structure evolved by its completion into a symbol of the Principate ideology and the reconciliation between the emperor and the Senate.
