The origins of the complex date back to the year 1200, when the Templars established a settlement here. Following the dissolution of the Templar Order in the early 14th century, the property passed to the Order of St. John, which continued the site as a commandery. Under the rule of the Johanniters, the commandery developed into an important administrative and economic center in the region.
