Located in the picturesque town of Lindau, on the shores of Lake Constance, stands a historic sacred building that once served as a Tertiary convent and a Beguine community. Its history is marked by change and various uses that the building underwent over the centuries.
History+
The origins of the convent date back to 1268, when it was founded as a Beguine community. This early community existed until May 15, 1525, when the convent was dissolved and the property sold. After a long period of secular use, in 1857, the English Ladies, an institute from the mother house in Munich-Nymphenburg, acquired the estate. They established a private girls' high school there, fulfilling the educational mission of the order. This educational institution, known as the “Insel-Institut,” existed until its dissolution in 1991. Today, the tradition of girls' education in the premises is continued by the Maria-Ward-Realschule, which is under the patronage of the School Board of the Diocese of Augsburg.
