The origins of Tinnahinch Castle date back to 1475, when Tadhg MacLaighnigh Ui Duinn, a local ruler, had the main castle of the Dunnes built in the parish of Rearymore. A map from 1563 recorded the castle, then known as Baun Riaganach, near the River Barrow. The name Tinnahinch derives from the Irish “Tigh-na-hlnnse,” meaning “House of the Island.” The castle's fate turned in 1653 when it was attacked and destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's troops under Colonel Hewson.
