Tom Roden

A chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene was already mentioned at this site in 1184. Around this chapel, Abbot Hermann I von Holte founded a priory of Corvey Abbey. A first provost is documented for the year 1244. The priory, which had a small chapter, was subordinate to Corvey. Records from the 13th century mention a convent and dignitaries. Between 1324 and 1327, the chapel and other buildings were destroyed by fire, possibly in connection with attacks by Duke Otto of Braunschweig on Corveyan territory. After reconstruction, an altar foundation from 1422 testifies to the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary Solitaria. In 1431, two prebends were transferred here from Corvey. From the second half of the 15th century onwards, the office of provost was often a sinecure, and a convent likely no longer existed. Around 1482, the priory's water supply was cut off by redirecting the Schelpe stream to Corvey Abbey. Johann von der Lippe, the last provost, moved to Höxter in 1501. After his death in 1538, the office was not refilled for financial reasons, and the complex was later used as a quarry.

The former priory of Tom Roden is situated within the municipality of Höxter in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The ruins of the former priory were archaeologically investigated between 1975 and 1980. The excavated and partially reconstructed remains are now freely accessible and protected as an archaeological monument. The excavations revealed a three-aisled basilica with a choir apse and western tower, as well as the arrangement of the monastic buildings around a cloister. A sophisticated water supply system and various heating systems were also discovered.
