Gate Castle Tettnang
On the edge of Tettnang's old town stands Torschloss Tettnang, a Renaissance ensemble. Originally part of the medieval town fortifications, it developed into a structure that now serves as a cultural center.
History+
The origins of Torschloss date back to 1330, when Count Wilhelm II of Montfort had the town fortifications erected. In the 16th century, it came into the possession of the regional clerk Johannes Teuthold, who redesigned the residential building and added a chapel. After the old castle was destroyed, the Counts of Montfort reacquired the castle in 1629 and expanded it. It served as the counts' residence until the completion of the Old Castle Tettnang in 1677. At the end of the 18th century, the ensemble became municipal property and was used, among other things, as a schoolhouse.
