History+

The origins of Totnes Castle date back to the 11th century when Judhael de Totnes, a follower of William the Conqueror, erected the first fortification. This early structure, likely made of wood, served to secure his dominion over the surrounding land, which he had received in 1086. After Judhael's loss of the property, possibly due to his role in the rebellion of 1088, the estate passed to Roger de Nonant. Later, probably in the 13th century, William de Braose had the stone structures, still visible today, constructed.
