The Tour César in Provins, a historic fortress in the Île-de-France region, is a striking structure that dominates the upper town. This unique 12th-century keep is distinguished by its unusual octagonal shape on a square base and also served as a prison throughout its history.

History+

The site's origins date back to the 9th century, when a castrum already existed there. The current tower, also known as the King's Tower or Great Tower, was likely built after 1150 under Henry the Liberal. A legend attributing its construction to Julius Caesar lacks historical evidence and rather symbolizes the power of the edifice. During the Hundred Years' War, the Tour César was occupied and walled by the English. Since 1846, it has been classified as a historical monument.
