Lower Castle Woringen

The origins of the Lower Castle Woringen are presumed to be in a Roman burgus, which once secured the Roman road from Kempten to Kellmünz. In 1323, Archduke Leopold I of Austria commissioned Konrad von Rothenstein to build two castles in Woringen, including the Lower Castle. At this time, the existing elevation was expanded into a moated castle by creating a ring moat and diverting the Rotensteinerbächle stream. The Lords of Rothenstein owned the castle until 1417, before it was sold to the Ravensburg family Möttelin, known as von Rappenstein. In 1516, the Free Imperial City of Memmingen acquired the property. Later, in 1849, the castle became the property of the Bavarian State and eventually passed to the municipality of Woringen. The Lower Castle received its current form through reconstruction work in the 17th century.
