In the Geisingen district of Freiberg am Neckar is the Lower Castle Geisingen, also known as Schertlin Castle or Old Castle. Originally conceived as a moated castle, it now houses a museum.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1486, when the Lords of Stammheim erected a moated castle complex on this site. In 1671, the property underwent an expansion by Wolf Ludwig Schertlin von Burtenbach, who added a courtyard with a wine press and a mill. Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg acquired the Schertlin family's properties in Geisingen in 1782. From 1793, the small castle, connected to the main building, served as the official residence of the Württemberg staff officer. A tower located behind the castle was demolished in 1818. In 1843, Württemberg sold the gatehouse.
