The Lower Castle Greiz, a former residence of the House of Reuss, stands on the banks of the White Elster in the Thuringian city of Greiz and today houses cultural institutions.

History+

The origins of the Lower Castle Greiz date back to the 16th century when it was built under Heinrich the Elder. Following a city fire in 1802, which destroyed large parts of the castle, a reconstruction in the Neoclassical style took place until 1809. A feature from this period is the former ballroom, now known as the White Hall, with its stucco work. Between 1884 and 1885, the castle was expanded with the addition of a south wing, which included a winter garden and rooms such as the Blue Salon, as well as a tower with an onion dome.
