Lower Castle Pähl

The construction of the Lower Castle Pähl presumably took place before the mid-16th century. The builder was Kaspar von Berndorf, who had acquired the lands in Pähl from Urban Aresinger in 1531. The castle subsequently served as the seat of an open Hofmark. Ownership changed hands, including Heinrich von Berndorf (1589), Ottheinrich von Berndorf, his son Philipp Karl (1663), and later Gottfried (1689). Gottfried's widow mortgaged the Hofmark to Dießen Abbey in 1722. In 1754, Matheus Carl von Vieregg redeemed the property and united it with the Hofmark Tutzing. The castle remained in family possession until the death of Maximilian Graf von Vieregg, the last male descendant of that line. In 1866, it passed to his sister Ilka von Wrede and remained in the Wrede family for almost 140 years thereafter.
