Lower Castle Rottenbauer

The Lower Castle Rottenbauer, also called Wolfskeel Castle, was added around 1575 to the existing Old Castle. The Old Castle is already mentioned in documents in 1376 as being in the possession of the Lords of Rebstock.

The legend of the White Lady surrounds the castle. According to the legend, which can also be found in church records over centuries, the husband, who went missing during the Crusades and was eventually declared dead, is said to have reappeared at the castle one night. However, he mysteriously disappeared again on the same night. The lady of the castle soon after celebrated her wedding with a new man, but both died only a few years later. Since then, a White Lady is said to regularly float around the castle tower at midnight. At the beginning of the 20th century, during repair work on the castle, the skeleton of a man, who still had his sword strapped on, was actually found walled up in a wall niche. Apparently, it was the lord of the castle who had returned at that time.
