Lower Castle Schnait

The history of the building, often referred to as "Schloss Rosenau," dates back to the the High Middle Ages. The first documented mention of a fortified structure on this site appears in a charter from 1286, referring to a "castrum Rosenau." At that time, it was a modest knight's castle, strategically located on a hill overlooking the valley.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, passing through various noble families. Each owner left their mark, adding new structures or modifying existing ones. However, it was during the Renaissance that the castle underwent its most significant transformation.

Around 1560, Hans Georg von Gaisberg zu Schnait und Waldenstein commissioned the construction of the current Schloss. This ambitious project saw the medieval fortifications replaced by a magnificent Renaissance palace, reflecting the wealth and status of its owner. The new Schloss incorporated elements of Italian Renaissance architecture, characterized by its symmetrical design, elegant facades, and spacious interiors.

In 1650, a separate building, known as the "New Schloss," was erected adjacent to the main Schloss. This addition provided further living quarters and reception rooms, expanding the complex significantly. The New Schloss, while still adhering to Renaissance principles, also incorporated some early Baroque elements, hinting at the changing architectural tastes of the time.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, further modifications and additions were made. These included the construction of a Baroque garden, the addition of an orangery, and the renovation of several interior spaces in the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. These later additions, while respecting the original Renaissance character of the Schloss, also introduced new architectural and artistic influences, creating a rich tapestry of styles.

In the 20th century, Schloss Rosenau faced new challenges. It survived two world wars relatively unscathed, but the changing social and economic landscape led to a period of decline. However, in the late 20th century, a comprehensive restoration project was initiated, aimed at preserving the Schloss for future generations.

Today, Schloss Rosenau stands as a testament to centuries of architectural evolution and noble history. It serves as a museum, open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of its former inhabitants and the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Schloss also hosts various cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions, ensuring its continued vitality as a center of art and history.
