Former Ursulinen Abbey

The former Ursuline convent in Kitzingen, Bavaria, was once a center for education and spirituality. The complex, dedicated to the Mother of God Mary, shaped the religious and social life of the city.

The convent was founded in 1660 on the initiative of Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn, who fulfilled a wish of Countess Maria Hatzfeld. Ursuline nuns from Metz were called to Kitzingen to lead a new Catholic girls' school. Initially, the nuns found accommodation in a former Benedictine convent, which was dilapidated and had previously been used as a Protestant women's collegiate foundation. Between 1686 and 1693, a new convent complex including a church was built on this site, with designs by Antonio Petrini.
