St. Joseph

The Ursuline convent was founded in 1668 by Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria with the explicit goal of establishing a girls' school. Originally from Meßkirch in Upper Swabia, where an earlier branch of the order had to be abandoned due to cramped conditions, the Ursulines found a new home in Landshut. Classes began on September 1, 1668, and within just a few weeks, approximately 100 girls were enrolled. Given the rapid growth, the Elector acquired four additional houses, which were demolished to make way for a new building. He personally laid the cornerstone for the new convent buildings on October 25, 1671. The construction was financed by the Ursuline order itself. The plans were drawn by court carpenter Augustin Kienle. Construction management was taken over by master mason Wolfgang Hirschstötter from 1673 and by court master mason Georg Steinacher from 1677. The Ursuline church was consecrated on October 20, 1679, and the convent was occupied on June 3, 1680. In the 18th century, St. Joseph developed into the city's largest pilgrimage site, centered around the miraculous image of "Our Lady with the Inclined Head." Despite armed conflicts during the War of the Spanish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Coalition Wars, convent operations were maintained.

The former Ursuline convent is located in the city of Landshut in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the Neustadt district of Landshut.

The convent was dissolved in 2016. The Ursuline Realschule, a secondary school, emerged from the long tradition of girls' education, with its sponsorship transferred to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising in 1992. The buildings are protected as an architectural monument in Bavaria.
