St. Vitus Cathedral

The origins of St. Vitus Cathedral date back to the 10th century, when a rotunda was built on this site under St. Wenceslas. From 1060, a Romanesque basilica was constructed under Spytihněv II and his successor Vratislav II, though it was significantly smaller than the current structure. The foundation stone for the present Gothic cathedral was laid in 1344 at the behest of Charles IV, when Prague was elevated to an archbishopric. Initially, the French master builder Matthias of Arras directed the work, and after his death in 1352, Peter Parler from Schwäbisch Gmünd took over construction management, followed by his sons Wenzel and Johann Parler the Younger. By the Hussite Wars in 1420, the choir and the main tower's foundation were completed. Construction was significantly delayed, and the tower's spire was only finished in the 16th century by Bonifaz Wolmut and Hans von Tirol, though it was altered in the Renaissance style in the 18th century and remained incomplete. In the 19th century, construction resumed through the Prague Cathedral Building Association and master builders like Joseph Kranner and Josef Mocker. The controversial western facade with two towers was built according to Mocker's design. Final completion only occurred in 1929 under Kamil Hilbert, just in time for the millennium of St. Wenceslas's death.
