Veltheimsburg Castle

The Bishop's Castle, first documented in 1180, served to protect the Archdeaconry of Alvensleben. In the early 14th century, it passed into the possession of the Archbishops of Magdeburg, who frequently mortgaged it. Between 1534 and 1598, it was restored by the von Alvensleben family before being administered as a territorial office. From 1649 and 1685 respectively, the castle fell into disrepair, except for its tower. The Margrave's Castle, also known as Hinterburg, was built before 1245 by the Margraves of Brandenburg next to the Bishop's Castle. From 1439, it was a fief of the Lords of Veltheim, who, after adding a new manor house in the 18th century, named it Veltheimsburg.
