The Veste Coburg, also known as the “Franconian Crown,” stands over the city of Coburg in the Bavarian border region with Thuringia. It is one of Germany's largest and best-preserved castle complexes.

History+

The first documented mention of Veste Coburg dates back to 1225, when it was owned by the Dukes of Merania. Archaeological findings suggest an earlier settlement in the 10th century. The castle changed hands multiple times, including the Counts of Henneberg and the Margraves of Brandenburg, before passing by inheritance in 1353 to Frederick III the Strict from the House of Wettin.
