Oberhaus Castle

Veste Oberhaus in Passau is one of Europe's largest and best-preserved castle complexes. Originally founded in 1219, it served for a long time as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Passau and documents the development of fortification art.
History+
The Veste Oberhaus was founded in 1219 under Prince-Bishop Ulrich II on the Georgsberg. It was intended to underscore the military strength of the Passau bishops after they attained the status of Imperial Princes and to offer protection against external enemies as well as the citizens of Passau. The fortress was continuously expanded and extended to withstand changing siege techniques. Significant renovations took place under Prince-Bishops such as Leonhard von Layming and Johann Philipp von Lamberg, who transformed the complex from a Gothic stronghold into a state fortress. Between 1250 and 1482, Veste Oberhaus withstood five sieges, including two by Passau citizens, all of which were unsuccessful.
