Hügel Manor

The construction of Villa Hügel in 1873 by Alfred Krupp marked a turning point in the family's lifestyle. After the introduction of procuration at Friedrich Krupp AG in 1862, Alfred Krupp sought a residence away from the company premises to focus on strategic decisions. As early as 1863, he acquired the site of the former Klosterbuschhof. Construction began in 1869 after old mine shafts had to be secured. Planning was marked by conflicts, as Krupp heavily interfered with the designs, insisting on his ideas of comfort and amenity. Despite changes in architects and wartime personnel shortages, the shell was completed in November 1870, albeit with cracks and a partial collapse. After further difficulties and the dismissal of several construction managers, the Krupp family finally moved in in January 1873. Under Friedrich Alfred Krupp (1888–1902), the villa was more luxuriously furnished and the art collection expanded. Bertha Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach (1902–1915) continued this development with numerous renovations.

Villa Hügel is located in the Bredeney district of Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 93 meters above sea level.

Today, Villa Hügel serves as a museum and cultural institution. The Kulturstiftung Ruhr manages the estate and regularly hosts concerts and exhibitions. Outside of these events, the villa is accessible to visitors during regular opening hours.
