Roman City of Ulpiana

Ulpiana, also known as Ulpianum, is the largest archaeological site in Kosovo by area. This ancient site near Gračanica was an administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Roman province of Moesia superior.
History+
During Roman times, Ulpiana was a municipium, whose prosperity was based on the precious metal deposits in its hinterland. The city's founding is attributed to Emperor Trajan or Hadrian. The original 36-hectare urban area (Gradina) from the Middle Imperial period was later supplemented by the smaller, 16.5-hectare Late Roman to Early Byzantine complex of Iustiniana Secunda (Bedem) to the east. Archaeological findings confirm that the site was already settled in pre-Roman times. After destructions caused by the Gothic Wars and an earthquake, Ulpiana experienced an extensive reconstruction program under Emperor Justinian.
Location+
The ancient site of Ulpiana is located in Gračanica, in the Gračanica district, in the Pristina region of Kosovo, at an elevation of approximately 576 m above sea level.
