Vöhlin Castle

Around 1300, a castle belonging to the Counts of Kirchberg stood on the site of the present-day castle, first mentioned in 1339. In 1520, ownership transferred to the merchant family Vöhlin, who rebuilt the Rear Castle in the Renaissance style between 1526-29. In 1549, the Rear Castle was damaged by a fire and rebuilt in 1550. In 1757, the Lordship of Illertissen had to be sold to Elector Max III Joseph of Bavaria due to over-indebtedness. In 1595, the Front Castle was newly constructed. In 1705, the French Building was erected. From 1720-30, the interiors were expanded in the Baroque style. In 1803, the castle served as the seat of the district court and the tax office.
