Wachenburg Castle

The Wachenburg is a castle complex on the Wachenberg above Weinheim in the Rhein-Neckar district of Baden-Württemberg. It was built in the style of a Romanesque castle and serves as a conference center.

History+

The Wachenburg was built between 1907 and 1928, financed by donations from the Weinheimer Senioren-Convent (WSC), an association of student corps. Originally planned as a memorial for fallen members of the Franco-Prussian War and combined with a festival area for annual meetings, an earlier attempt to use the Windeck castle ruin for this purpose failed. After acquiring a plot of land on the Wachenberg through a hereditary lease in 1903, Arthur Wienkoop's design was selected in 1906. The foundation stone was laid in 1907, the keep was inaugurated in 1908, and the palas was completed in 1913.
