Waldsassener Kasten

Museum, regional library

The Waldsassener Kasten in Weiden in der Oberpfalz stands as a remarkable Baroque edifice, once serving as an economic hub. Its architectural design and historical function establish it as a significant listed building in Bavaria.

History+

Between 1739 and 1742, the Waldsassener Kasten was constructed under the direction of master builder Johann Jacob Philipp Muttone, commissioned by the Waldsassen Monastery. Initially, the building was used for the administration and storage of in-kind contributions from the monastery's extensive estates surrounding Weiden. Following secularization in 1803, the property became owned by the state forestry office. Over time, it housed various institutions, including a district and regional court, as well as a vocational high school. After extensive renovation from 1986 to 1989, the International Ceramics Museum moved into the historic premises in April 1990.
