The current Pilgrimage Church of Birnau was built starting in 1750, replacing an older pilgrimage site. Its construction took place under the patronage of Mary. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Freiburg and has also served as a parish church for the surrounding villages of Deisendorf and Nußdorf since 1946. In 1971, it was elevated to a Basilica minor by Pope Paul VI. The building is a testament to the deep religious and artistic tradition of the region.
