Wamboltsches Castle (Groß-Umstadt)

The history of the area where Wamboltsches Schloss stands dates back to 1036, when it was mentioned as property of the von Hetterstorf family. In 1430, the site came into the possession of the Wambolt family through the marriage of Hans Wambolt to Johanna von Hettersdorf, though at that time it only featured smaller buildings. Between 1600 and 1602, the north wing was constructed in Renaissance style for Philipp III. Wambolt von Umstadt. Around 1671, the south wing was built by Colonel Friedrich von Wambolt. These expansions led to the current U-shaped complex. Until about 1700, the castle served as the residence of the Imperial Barons Wambolt von Umstadt, after which it primarily functioned as an administrative seat for their estates.
