Wartburg Castel

The founding of the Wartburg is attributed to Louis the Springer around the year 1067, with its name indicating its function as a 'watch castle'. Over the centuries, it was the scene of numerous important events. From 1211 to 1227, Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, later canonized, lived here. One of the most defining episodes was Martin Luther's stay from 1521 to 1522, where he hid as 'Junker Jörg' and translated the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the castle multiple times, and in the 19th century, it twice became a meeting point for German students during the Wartburg Festival (1817 and 1848), solidifying its status as a national monument. The castle's current appearance is largely shaped by its reconstruction in the 19th century, carried out under Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, which integrated only a few original parts.

The Wartburg is located in the city of Eisenach, in the district of the same name in Thuringia, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 390 m above sea level.
