History+
The origins of fortifications in Warwick date back to an early structure, which, according to legend, was built in 914 by Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great. Following the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century, William the Conqueror had the site developed into a Norman castle and appointed Henry de Newburgh as the Earl of Warwick. In 1264, the castle was briefly captured by Simon de Montfort's troops.
