Alt Barenaue Castle

The moated castle Alt Barenaue is located in Kalkriese, a district of Bramsche, in the Osnabrück district. Its construction took place in the 13th century by the Lords of Bar. Its existence is confirmed by the first documentary evidence from the years 1305 and 1341, where it is mentioned as “castro dicto tor bernowe”. Around 1862, the then owners moved their residence to the newly built Neu Barenaue Castle. The gatehouse from 1689 features an octagonal half-timbered tower in its upper section. Today, the moated castle Alt Barenaue is privately owned. Visitors can only view the complex, including its residential building and stables, from the outside. Among the older preserved structures is the gatehouse with its octagonal half-timbered tower.
