Kapellendorf Castle

Archaeological investigations in the 1930s confirmed settlement of the site as early as the early Bronze Age. The first stone fortification, an almost circular castle complex with a strong curtain wall and a moat, was built in the second half of the 12th century under the Burgraves of Kirchberg. In the 14th century, after its acquisition by the city of Erfurt, the castle was significantly expanded and reached its current size. A five-story residential tower and a kitchen building date from this expansion phase.
