Mauel Castle

In 1555, Wilhelm von Etzbach was the owner of the manor house. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Lords of Vellbrück took up residence here, but later leased out the property. In 1787, they sold the property to the previous tenant, Peter Voss, for 23,000 Bergisch talers. In 1794, the Benedictine monks of Brauweiler Abbey near Cologne, who had fled from the French occupation troops, found shelter in the castle for some time. Further owners included the families Hundhausen, Kammerich, Kirchbaum, and Wehner. In 1991, the Lenz/Schmid family acquired the building and renovated it. Today, a beer garden and a wine tavern invite visitors to rest.

Peter Voss replaced the massive gable and the flattened shingle roof with a slate-covered hip roof. In 1841, the north entrance with the drawbridge was closed, and a solid, three-arched bridge was built on the south side. Later, a stone bridge was also built on the east side.
