Mauel Castle

In 1555, Wilhelm von Etzbach was recorded as the owner of the manor house. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Lords of Vellbrück took up residence in the castle, but later leased the property. In 1787, it was sold to the then tenant Peter Voß for 23,000 Bergisch talers. Voß initiated alterations, including replacing the massive gable and the shingled roof with a slate-covered hip roof. In 1794, Benedictine monks from Brauweiler Abbey, fleeing French occupation troops, found temporary refuge in the castle. Other owners included the Hundhausen, Kammerich, Kirchbaum, and Wehner families.
