Gallspach Castle

The first documentary mention of the Gallspach noble seat dates to 1120. The complex is named after the Gallspacher family, who served as vassals of the Schaunberger. In 1343, both a house and a fortress of Gallspach were mentioned. Between 1343 and 1354, Eberhard von Wallsee V. was the owner, before selling the castle to Heinrich Geumann in 1354, but reserving the feudal rights. The Geumann family was enfeoffed with the lordship in 1461 and again in 1479. After the extinction of the Wallsee family, Gallspach passed directly to the sovereign. Under Emperor Frederick III and later Maximilian I, the Geymann family continued to be enfeoffed with the castle. In 1502, cousins Balthasar and Tristram Geymann divided their inheritance, with Balthasar receiving Gallspach. The Geumanns remained in possession of the castle until the Counter-Reformation but had to emigrate as Protestants. In 1633, Gallspach was sold to Christoph Weiß von Würthing and changed hands several times in the following decades, including Tobias Prodvischer von Waldberg and Veit Spindler.
