Mitwitz Castle

Wasserschloss Mitwitz was first documented in 1266, at which time it was a fief of the Bamberg diocese and belonged to the Barons von Schaumberg. The lower floors of the north wing and the northern corner tower already existed then. In 1425, the castle came into the possession of the Lords of Rosenau. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the complex was plundered and partially destroyed by fire, leading to only makeshift repairs. It was not until 1575 that Hieronymus von Würtzburg acquired the property. In the late 16th century, Hans Veit I. von Würtzburg had the castle extensively rebuilt and expanded to its current external appearance under the direction of master builder Daniel Engelhardt. The Würtzburg family owned the castle until the death of Ludwig Freiherr von Würtzburg in 1922.
