Altendorf Churchcastle
The Protestant village church of St. Martini is located in the Altendorf district of the city of Kelbra in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt.
The church of the former village of Altendorf was probably built in the 11th century as a Romanesque fortified church. It is said to be one of the oldest churches in the Kyffhäuser region. The church was first mentioned in 1093 and first named in a document in 1251. Early Romanesque remains prove its age. In 1357 and later, the church was significantly rebuilt to adapt to changing conditions. On July 8, 1357, Bishop Albertus consecrated the altar of the Martini Church.
In 1745, during the relocation of the altar, a small box inlaid with ivory was found, which reported on the reconstruction of the altar from 1357. Further finds were also recovered.
Architecture+
The church tower has a pyramidal roof with a clock on each side. The open lantern is octagonal. A spire is located on the lantern. Inside the tower is a cross vault with Romanesque round-arched windows. The nave has similar, but bricked-up, windows on the west side. Small pointed-arch windows are set into the south side. The probably oldest baptismal font in the Kyffhäuser area is chalice-shaped.
