The Weiherschloss Emmendingen: A Jewel of History+
From Water Castle to Baroque Palace+

The Weiherschloss Emmendingen was built in 1757 on the walls of an old water castle by Leopold von Dungern.

The history of the site, however, goes back much further. Already in the Middle Ages, a fortified water castle stood here, which served to protect the city and the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded.

In the mid-18th century, Leopold von Dungern acquired the property and decided to replace the dilapidated medieval castle with a modern baroque palace. The construction work lasted several years, and the result was an impressive building that still characterizes the townscape of Emmendingen today.

Architectural Features+

The Weiherschloss Emmendingen is a prime example of Baroque architecture. The palace has a symmetrical facade with a central projection and two side wings. The windows are decorated with elaborate sandstone frames, and the roof is adorned with a graceful spire.

Inside, the palace impresses with its spacious rooms and magnificent stucco ceilings. Particularly noteworthy is the grand ballroom, which was used for festive occasions and concerts.

The Palace Today+

Today, the Weiherschloss Emmendingen houses the local museum, which presents the history of the city and the region. Visitors can admire historical exhibits, learn about the life of the former inhabitants, and immerse themselves in the past.

In addition, the palace is regularly used for cultural events, such as concerts, readings, and exhibitions. The historic ambience provides a unique setting for these events and attracts numerous visitors.
