White Castle Heroldsberg

In 1471, Andreas Geuder acquired hereditary rights to the churchyard and an adjoining garden. According to a document from 1487, he had by then begun construction of a manor house on "his homestead in Heroldsberg," which is presumably the White Castle. When the Geuder family divided their properties in Heroldsberg in 1517, a "manor house next to the large house" – the Green Castle – is mentioned, which likely refers to the "White" Castle. After its destruction in the Second Margrave War of 1552, the current building, which still stands today, was rebuilt in 1587. The three-story manor house with three by five window axes, a gabled roof, a hipped gable, and dormer windows rises directly above the slope in front of the churchyard. Due to its poor structural condition, a comprehensive renovation took place in 1762 (?), during which the multi-story bay windows on the gable ends were removed, and instead, an octagonal, four-story stair tower with plastered half-timbering, a tent roof, and a wooden spiral staircase was added on the east side.

Elsa Johanna von Mayer-Starzhausen, born Freiin von Geuder-Rabensteiner, sold the castle to the market town of Heroldsberg in 1928, which used it as a town hall and the mayor's residence. In the 1930s and 1940s, a kindergarten was housed on the ground floor next to the mayor's office, while the spacious area with the castle pond at the foot of the White Castle was transformed into an outdoor swimming pool, today's Schlossbad. In 1952, a renovation and conversion took place, during which ceilings were lowered, a room on the ground floor was divided, and the upper floors were incorporated into the municipal administration. Nevertheless, by the 1970s, parts of the administration had to be relocated. In 2005, the town hall finally moved to the new civic center on Hauptstraße.
