Weißfrauen-/Cölestinerinnenkloster (Magdalenerinnen) Aachen

Monastery (active)

The former Weißfrauen Monastery in Aachen, originally a Magdalen convent, represents a significant chapter in the city's history. Founded in 1237, it served as a spiritual center and refuge for centuries. Its eventful history is marked by destruction, reconstruction, and the transition to different religious communities.

History+

The monastery was founded by the Magdalens in the mid-13th century on land between Jakobstraße and Bendelstraße, donated by influential Aachen patrician families. An initial chapel, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, was first mentioned in a document in 1245. Originally dedicated to caring for repentant women, the community later opened its doors to respectable, often noble, virgins. Over the centuries, the monastery suffered several destructions, including fire damage in the early 15th century and complete annihilation by the great city fire of 1656. Reconstruction began in 1668, and the monastery church was reconsecrated in 1687. Due to financial difficulties and internal conflicts, the Magdalens left the monastery in 1729. The Cölestinerinnen from Düsseldorf took over the complex and continued the monastic tradition until secularization in 1802.

Location+

The monastery is located in the Aachen city region, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

After the secularization in 1802 and various interim uses, the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus acquired the site in 1848 and established a new monastic complex there.
