Weitmoser Castle

Hans Weitmoser, documented as a landowner in the Gastein Valley from 1518 and a leader of the Salzburg peasant uprising, acquired mining shares and found success in mining. His son Christoph Weitmoser inherited in 1526, took on debts, but was able to repay them through ore finds around 1530. He was among the financiers of nobles and acquired the Goldeckhof around 1538, which burned down in 1553 and was rebuilt the following year. Christoph Weitmoser became an imperial councilor in 1552 and was elevated to knighthood in 1555. After his death in 1558, the division of the fortune led to the family's economic decline. In the early 17th century, the property changed hands several times. The Leykhofer family acquired it in 1606 and 1621 and extended it with a newly built wing featuring round bay windows. In 1628, the castle chapel was consecrated.
