Westerburg Castle

The first documented mention of Westerburg dates back to 1192, though its origins likely precede this. Initially owned by the Counts of Leiningen, the castle passed to the Lords of Runkel in the early 13th century through marriage. In the first half of the same century, it became the ancestral seat of the Lords of Westerburg, who definitively separated from Runkel by 1288 under Heinrich I. von Westerburg. The complex underwent expansions and renovations and served as the residence for a branch of the Counts of Leiningen-Westerburg.
