Wetterburg Castle

Count Heinrich IV of Waldeck had Wetterburg built in 1306, as a direct response to the pledging of Volkmarsen and Kugelsburg to Archbishop Heinrich II of Virneburg of Cologne in 1304. This new construction provoked the Archbishop, leading to legal disputes. In 1325, it was agreed to grant half of Wetterburg to the Archbishop of Cologne, with the use of the castle in conflicts between the parties being prohibited. This joint ownership arrangement lasted until 1454, followed by numerous changes of ownership. In March 1516, Götz von Berlichingen abducted Count Philipp II of Waldeck in front of the castle, which led to his second imperial ban in 1518.
