Wildenburg Castle, a hilltop castle, is located in the National Park community of Hellenthal in the district of Euskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the few Eifel castles that has not been destroyed by war or demolition, thus preserving its historical substance.

History+

The origins of Wildenburg Castle date back to the early 13th century, when between 1202 and 1235, the Wildenberg line descended from the dynasts of Reifferscheid and built the castle. The Lords of Wildenberg established a dominion with possessions extending to the Rhine and Moselle rivers. After the male line died out in 1328, the lordship passed to the Counts of Jülich. In 1715, the abbots of Steinfeld acquired the complex and converted the castle house into a church in 1717.
